Refresh

After a while away from yoga class (because I don't believe in going to class when it's a triple-digit oven outside), I started up again last week. As usual, I realize how much I've missed yoga within the first five minutes of practice--even if I feel like a creaky old lady. One of my favorite poses is Triangle.

Here, Mini demonstrates it:
  • Place your back foot parallel with the back of your mat and your front foot toward the top of your mat, pointed ahead.
  • Outstretch your arms, facing toward the top of your mat.
  •  Reach your front arm as far as  you can before bending from the hip and placing your hand on your shin, ankle, or foot.
  • Stretch your opposite arm toward the sky.
  • Turn your gaze upward.
  • Breathe.
  • Use your core to lift and stretch in these opposing directions, maintaining your balance, as if between two panes of glass.

Be sure to do both sides!

Ahhh, refreshing!

Intention

I skipped yoga class today, but The Kitties didn't: We start most yoga classes in a comfortable seated position. Once centered, we bring our palms together to seal the intention or dedication of our practice, sometimes with a single chant of "om."

Forward

It's Kitty Yoga time!

Stand with feet parallel, hip-width apart. Hinge from the hip with a flat back and line up fingers and toes.

Chin to shin, hang like a rag doll. Sway side to side and hold on to opposite elbows, if that feels good. For a shoulder opener, interlace fingers behind your back, making a fist with your paws, and reach toward the front of the room.

Uttanasana: Forward Fold.

Fuel

Last weekend, I flew to Columbus to celebrate my nephew's 8th birthday with family. I spent this week stuck on drawing last Sunday's scene--sitting on the couch with Norman cradled in my arms, both of us enjoying one of our unavoidable naps. (When I go home, I always think of it as time to refuel.) But drawing was fruitless: My human looked more dead than asleep. And, I couldn't keep from falling asleep after only a few pencil lines (and lots of erasing) each night I attempted to make progress.

Today is the first day I've felt back to normal--a noticeable incremental change that I must attribute to yoga. The first day back to class, it was as though I'd never done yoga before and I may not last the hour. The second day, I felt a little stronger. And, yesterday, I was at about 97%. I took the day off from class today and got back to drawing with a new idea.

No wonder Lily greets me like this every time she wakes from a nap (corkscrew tale typically included). Here, she demonstrates what she calls Downward-Facing Cat using my old mat, which she dug out from the bedroom closet. (Is that why she always wants to get in there?)

Layer

For this week's Illustration Friday topic, "Layer," all I could think of was clothing and fashion. But since Simon modeled his holiday sweater last week, I resisted working on tiered kitty dresses.

Saturday, I went to Yin Yang Yoga class, during which we are asked to hold positions for several minutes at a time. It's supposed to help release your inner tissues, tendons, and cartilage, which are harder to reach during the more active classes. Pigeon pose is common in Yin Yoga.

  • Seated, place one leg so that your shin is parallel with the front of your mat--or as parallel as you can get it.
  • Your other leg goes straight back, in line with your hip.
  • At first, you prop  yourself up on your hands and "open your heart" toward the sky for a slight back bend.
  • Then, roll forward until your forehead touches the mat. (Depending on how far you can go, you can rest on your forearms or on a prop, such as a block.)
  • Our instructor added a twist to this pose, suggesting that we rest on one side with our bottom arm outstretched. (I could do the twist well on one side but not the other.)

A huge hip opener, Pigeon pose is always a struggle for me. Whether it's slightly better or much worse depends on the day. I suppose it doesn't help that I work all day at a desk and then draw all night on the couch.

While I was lying there trying to focus on my breathing but really wondering  how long five minutes could last, I started to imagine my hip breaking free of whatever crud and cartilage I was feeling. The longer we stayed put, the looser my hip felt. That's when the instructor started talking about his theme for the day: Layers.

He spoke of how yoga helps to peel away the layers of obstacles--stress, fears, preconceptions, and whatever else is holding you back. However slowly, these layers fall away and you then can focus on individual elements of yourself--be it your hip, your breath, your flexibility, your mind, your openness, or something even deeper. You work toward peeling these layers one by one until your completely open physically--and maybe more important--mentally.

I told The Kitties all about this when I got home, and Gordon got all fired up about getting on his mat. He took charge of Sunday's Kitty Class, and here they show off how good they all are at Pigeon pose.

Yeah, well, they're cats.

I must point out, though, that Norman was already too exhausted for Pigeon pose and opted to rest in Child's pose instead. (We'd all stay in Child's pose for the whole class if he had his way!) And, The Mother Kitty, who has bad knees, opted for an alternative pose. As they always say in yoga class, every body is different.

Resolutions

One of my many resolutions this year was to get back to yoga class. I had ignored it for a few months--sometimes unavoidably, sometimes not. I dreaded that old, creaky lady feeling I was sure that my first would give me. Watching Lily do her kitty moves psyched me up for my first class back January 1.

Not surprisingly, the benefits of yoga ruled! Well, I'm still creaky and quite inflexible and typically unbalanced in this chilly weather, but yoga is doing its usual magic, breaking it all down and lifting my spirits. So far, so good. The Kitties agree. They, too, got the itch and now, all of our mats are out to stay. Namaste!

There are times when Comet relaxes. On those rare occasions, he treats us with yogic poses.
